Most concrete problems can be traced back to a conversation that never happened. These questions help you understand exactly what you are buying—whoever you hire.
1. What exactly is included in the price?
Ask for the scope in writing: removal and hauling, excavation, base material, forms, reinforcement, concrete, finishing, joints, sealing if applicable, and cleanup. Surprises usually live in the line items that were never listed.
2. How thick will the concrete be, and what reinforcement is planned?
Thickness and reinforcement should match the use. A walkway, a passenger-car driveway, and an RV pad are not the same project. A contractor who cannot explain their thickness and reinforcement plan for your use is telling you something important.
3. How will the base be prepared?
Concrete is only as reliable as what sits under it. Ask how soft spots, organic material, and drainage will be handled, and whether new base material will be placed and compacted where needed.
4. Where will the water go?
Every new surface changes drainage. Ask how the finished elevations will move water away from your home and where runoff will discharge—especially if your property slopes toward a neighbor.
5. What is the timeline, and when can I use the surface?
Get the expected start window, the number of work days, and clear guidance on foot traffic and vehicle loads. Weather can shift schedules, but a professional should still give you a realistic frame.
6. Who will actually be on site?
Ask whether the person quoting the job will be present during the pour, and who your point of contact is if something changes mid-project.
7. How are changes and surprises handled?
Hidden conditions—buried debris, unexpected soft soil, unmarked utilities—happen. Agree in advance on how additional work will be priced and approved before it proceeds.
